In the American southwest, the structures and art of indigenous people often include circles and spirals as a representation of energy and movement. When practicing the t’ai chi, circles and spirals allow the practitioner to apply similar intent and energy while moving through the form.
Think of the beginning of the spiral when initiating a move, then feel it winding through to the hands, feet and head. For example, when you begin a pivot on your foot, begin the rotation from the hip. The spiral of energy rolls outward and your move is solid and powerful, grounding you in dynamic motion.
The circle is represented throughout the form and its curved shape encourages soft, fluid, spacious and powerful movement. In addition, you can contemplate the circle’s characteristics: no beginning and no end, return to where you started, and much more. It’s simple but limitless.
