The Denver area is a wonderful place to be outside in the spring, summer and fall. If you are used to practicing your t’ai chi inside and want to move outside for a change, do a little preparation. Moving from the controlled inside environment to outside can be a little distracting and disorienting at first. However, it’s a good way to refine your focus, be in the moment with the form, and enjoy the beauty of nature! Try these tips for a smooth indoor-to-outdoor transition:
Find a place without too much noise and people traffic.
Dress as if you were going for a walk. You might need gloves if it’s cool.
Pick out four north, south, east and west spots/landmarks to orient yourself on the directional compass.
Be aware of unevenness of the ground and the difference between the outdoor surface and the one you’re used to.
Use peripheral vision to find a balance of focus and awareness of your surroundings.
Allow the sounds and sights to be in your awareness without distracting you.
