When I sit down at the keyboard and find myself lacking in motivation, I start by running some diagnostics. These help guide me to the right tool for the job of fixing the energy leak so I can move forward.
I use the tool metaphor because this challenge feels like a mechanical issue. For me, lack of motivation isn’t quite the same as writer’s block. It is more of a recurring, temporary condition, affected by everyday factors such as energy, mood and circumstances of the day. The tools to surmount these challenges are reliable for the most part, although in a perfect world they would be permanent solutions to transform me into a perpetually motivated dynamo.
To state the obvious, motivating myself is easier without de-motivators. In my own experience, the top four de-motivators are laziness, poor time management, self-doubt and mental disorganization. Over the next couple of weeks I’ll write four posts on each of the above topics, with a few antidotes I have found to be helpful.
